Islanders vs. Penguins 3/30/13

Here are some notes for those fans getting ready to watch the New York Islanders (16-15-3) who are on the road to take on the Pittsburgh Penguins (27-8-0) in NHL action this afternoon.

Tonight is the final matchup of the season against the Penguins. New York won the first meeting, but lost the last three to Pittsburgh. New York is riding high on a three-game winning streak and a four-game road winning streak.

Islanders Recap:

Colin McDonald scored two goals in the third period and Josh Bailey tallied the shootout winner, as the Islanders defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 on  Thursday. New York was able to rally for three straight goals from John Tavares and  McDonald.

Tavares the Terrific:

John Tavares’ 21 goals rank second in the NHL (Stamkos has 22). Tavares ranks seventh in the league in total points (36), while has a hot stick of late with a five-game point streak (4g/1a) over that stretch.

Isles On Fire:

Matt Moulson is another player with a hot stick for the Islanders with his three-game assists streak, with exactly one helper in each game. Moulson has 10 assists in the last 10 games, with at least one assist in nine of those 10.

The Director of Homeland Security:

New York goalkeeper Evgeni Nabokov has been the rock for the Islanders in the cage, acting as the director of homeland security for the team in 29-of-34 games this season; only four goalies have played more games.

Islestones to watch for:

Andrew MacDonald is one assist shy of 50

Marty Reasoner is three goals shy of 100

The Islanders and Penguins game is set to air on the MSG Plus Network, with face-off scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
