Road Match Ends in Heartbreak Loss For NYCFC 3-2

The New York City Football club took a disappointing loss in Columbus against the Crew as the Cityzens dropped the road match 3-2 on a late goal by midfielder Lucas Zelarayán as Columbus continues it’s home success against New York having won 4 of it’s last 5 matches at Lower.com Field.

1495 Sports is proud to bring the following Post Match Press Conference Video Featuring thoughts from Alfredo Morales:

On a night where the team caught a lucky break in the first 4 minutes after a Santi Rodriguez shot was redirected by defender Jonathan Mensah and into his own net for an Own Goal but a early 1-0 New York league. However a Cucho Hernandez equalizer at the 20th knotted things at 1. After falling behind 2-1 on Zelarayán’s 1st of the night at 27, the team came out in the second half with more energy and a greater focus . Gabriel Pereira got credit for the equalizer after a second redirected shot by a Columbus defender got past Crew goalkeeper Eloy Room. However 10 minutes later Zelarayán picked up his 2nd goal of the night on a right footed shot to the left side of the net and the game winner.

NYCFC fans can also check out the following video featuring thoughts from Head Coach Nick Cushing:

After the match, Cushing praised his team, but admitted there were too many mistakes. “I think we gave their midfield players too much space in the first half. They did a really good job at stretching out our midfield players and getting Lucas Zelarayán and Cucho Hernandez on the ball in between the lines.” But the team has an opportunity to rebound as they will be having their second match against Inter Miami in 3 weeks after a 2-0 win at home back on July 23.

5 Notes:

1) Lucas Zelarayán continues his success against NYCFC. His two goals gave him 6 in 6 games against the Gents in Blue. He currently leads Columbus with 8 goals on the season.

2) Coming into last night NYCFC had already matched their road win total from last year with 4 (last year going 4-8-5 away from the Bronx). Additionally since the 2018 season only once has the team won more than 4 road games in a season when they won 7 in 2019.

3) Facing Miami again in such a short amount of time could be a good thing for New York. Miami sits in 9th place in the East however they are strong at home, going 6-3-3 in Florida.

4) NYCFC trailed at halftime for only the fifth time this season.  New York City FC now has a record of 1-1-4 this season when losing at halftime. On the other side the Columbus Crew now has a record of 6-2-1 when leading on at halftime. Part of the success comes from scoring 14 goals in the final 30 minutes.

5) Alex Callens came up limp after a collision in the middle of the second half. Early reports state it’s an MCL Sprain. A tear would have meant the end of his season however Callens is expected to miss some playing time and the MLS All- Star Game.
