Whenever the Washington Capitals and the New York Rangers meet on the ice, there are sure to be fireworks. The most recent meeting between the two on Sunday was no exception, as the Capitals defeated the Rangers 5-4 in a thriller at Capital One Arena.
Washington powered in the Second Period of play as Tom Wilson scored twice, and Alex Ovechkin was also able to find the back of the cage for a 3-0 lead.
In the third Evgeny Kuznetsov added on for a 4-0 lead, before Colin Blackwell scored twice to help get the Blueshirts into the game. Things went back and forth between the two teams as T.J. Oshie made the game 5-2 in favor of the Capitals at the 11:46 mark.
The Rangers made things close thanks to goals by Alex Lafreniere and Chris Kreider, but the Capitals defense stood tall and shut down the rest of the Blueshirts offense to skate away with the well-earned victory.
There were so many keys to the victory for Washington, including the fact that Nic Dowd was able to win 10 of 13 faceoffs during the night. Dowd now ranks eight in the NHL in faceoff win percentage, among skaters with at least 400 faceoffs taken.
Ovechkin continues his climb towards the greats in NHL scoring, as with his marker against the Rangers, the Captain now has career goal number 724, which is also his 464th at even strength. Ovechkin is now tied with Brett Hull for Sixth Most in that category, behind only Wane Gretzky (617), Gordie Howe (566), Jaromir Jagr (538), Marcel Dionne (478) and Mike Gartner (467).
The rivalry between these two teams is not over as they will be meeting at Madison Square Garden this Tuesday in a game that is set for 7:00 p.m.
