The Washington Capitals four-game winning streak came to and end on Friday in the team’s 5-1 loss to the Boston Bruins.
There was a milestone moment for the Capitals as Nicklas Backstrom was able to record the 700th assist of his amazing NHL Career, as Backstrom was key to setting-up the goal by Jakub Vrana.
Backstrom became the first Capitals in the team’s history, while now being the 54th player in NHL history to reach that milestone. The Center also is the second fastest active player (Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins, 856 games) and the 23rd fastest player in NHL history to reach this mark.
Backstrom is in the history book in a bunch of other categories as well, as he is one of three NHL players in the league to record at least 20 goals and 50 assists in four of the last five seasons (Patrick Kane, Chicago; Connor McDavid, Edmonton). The Swiss-born player is one of 42 players in NHL history to record six career seasons with at least 20 goals and 20 assists.
In what was a physical and intense hockey game, the Bruins were able to set the tone early on and never looked back. Boston was led by Brad Marchand who scored twice, Trent Frederic, Patrice Bergeron, and Nick Ritchie.
The loss was a tough one for the Capitals, who entered the game with a 7-1-1 record, during that stretch the team had only given up 19 goals.
The Washington Capitals will now head to Philadelphia for a one game set with the Flyers set for Sunday at 7:00 p.m.
