The Washington Capitals waited a week of postponements to play hockey again and suffered a 6-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in NHL action on Sunday.
The Penguins were able to find the back of the cage twice in each period, which included a pair of empty netters in the third to skate away with the victory.
One of the many stars in the game for Pittsburgh was Bryan Rust who had a pair of goals and three points.
Washington has been able to do a great job of gaining the lead, as they have had one in 12 of the last 13 games, it has just been the team unable to hold on to that lead.
Scoring the first goal in the game for the Capitals was Evgeny Kuznetsov in the first period.
Pittsburgh responded quickly in the frame thanks to goals by Rust and Brandon Tanev.
In the second period Jakub Vrana was able to get the Capitals back in the game, before goals by Rust and Jake Guentzel was able to give Pittsburgh a 4-2 lead. Nicklas Backstrom cut the lead for Washington at the 17:49 mark.
The Penguins were able to score twice in the third period thanks to goals by Zach Aston-Reese and Sidney Crosby, which helped to lift them to the victory.
These two teams will have a day to adjust their game plan before going up against each other again on Tuesday, with the puck drop set for 7:00 p.m.
