The Buffalo Sabres were dominant in the face-off circle and that was one of the biggest reasons for the team’s 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers in NHL action on Tuesday night.
New York was able to get on the board first thanks to a goal by Chris Kreider, who was set up beautifully on an assist by Pavel Buchnevich. The Sabres were able to quickly wipe that away thanks to a goal by Dylan Cozens at the 12:50 mark. A bit of history was made at the 19:53 mark when K’Andre Miller recorded his first NHL goal for the Rangers with 19:53 on the clock.
It was a fast and furious game between these two teams, as they were able to play some tremendous defense throughout. Buffalo was able to gain momentum and never looked back in the Second Period, starting with a goal by Tobias Rieder at the 6:03 mark. Rieder was able to find a loose puck and used an amazing burst of speed to able to score a goal that notched the game up at 2. The Sabres took a lead on a goal by Jack Eichel at the 7:31 mark, which was enough to seal the victory.
For Eichel, who scored on a power-play opportunity, he was able to tie Jochen Hecht for the 19th-most goals in franchise history (138). He now trails Drew Stafford by seven goals for 18th. Eichel who has 41 power-play goals now ranks 18th in Sabres history.
With the victory the Sabres have wins in consecutive matchups with the Rangers for the first time, since they have won three in a row from April 2, 2016 to January 3, 2017. Thus far the Sabres have been struggling on the power- plays but were able to cash in on this night as they have now scored five goals in a two-game span for the first time since October 5 and 7, 2019.
A bit of history was made for the Sabres as well as Rasmus Ristolainen appeared in his 500th NHL game tonight, becoming the 31st player to appear in 500 games for the Sabres. Ristolainen is the first to reach this milestone since Drew Stafford played in his 500th game with the team on March 11, 2014 vs Nashville.
The Sabres and Rangers have a day off before facing-off again on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. meeting at KeyBank Center
