The Washington Capitals have been a very busy team thus far as they have been making some big time moves to make the squad a contender for the Stanley Cup in the 2021 Season. Most recently the Capitals have signed three defenders in Paul LaDue, Trevor van Riemsdyk and Cameron Schilling to the team.
LaDue, 28, recorded an assist in two games with the Los Angeles Kings last season. Additionally, the 6’2″, 200-pound defenseman registered 27 points (9g, 18a) in 48 games with the Ontario Reign of the American Hockey League (AHL).
The Grand Forks, N.D., native recorded five points (2g, 3a) in 33 games with the Kings in the 2018-19 season. LaDue led all team defensemen with at least 15 games played in shot attempt percentage at five-on-five (402 shot attempts for, 393 against) and ranked second in hits per 60 minutes of play (7.01).
LaDue attended the University of North Dakota, winning an NCAA Championship during the 2015-16 season.
Originally selected by Los Angeles in the sixth round, 181st overall, in the 2012 NHL Draft, LaDue has 18 points (5g, 13a) in 69 career NHL games.
van Riemsdyk is an intimitading presence to the Capitals defense as he stands 6’2″ and weighing at 192-pounds. Trevor has recorded eight points (1g, 7a) in 49 games with the Carolina Hurricanes last season.
The Defender has appeared in 26 career playoff games with the Chicago Blackhawks and the Hurricanes and won the Stanley Cup as a member of the Blackhawks in 2015. In 364 regular season games between Chicago and Carolina, van Riemsdyk has recorded 69 points (15g, 54a).
van Riemsdyk played in three seasons at the University of New Hampshire from 2011-14, earning NCAA (Hockey East) All-Rookie Team honors in 2012. Additionally, during the 2012-13 season, van Riemsdyk was named to the NCAA (East) First All-American Team.
The final signing to the Capitals defense is that of Schilling, 32, who recorded 24 points (5g, 19a) in 54 games with the Manitoba Moose (AHL) last season, which ranked second among team defensemen.
The Carmel, Ind., native was originally signed by the Capitals on March 27, 2012 as a college free agent out of Miami University of Ohio. Schilling made his NHL debut with the Capitals on March 12, 2013 against the Carolina Hurricanes and appeared in six games with Washington from 2012-15. In 10 career NHL games with the Capitals and Winnipeg Jets, Schilling recorded one assist.
In addition, Schilling played in 210 career AHL games with the Hershey Bears between 2011-15, recording 50 points (13g, 37a).
