Capitals Round-Robin Struggles Continue in 3-1 loss to Flyers

In the National Hockey League there isn’t a whole lot of room for errors and that is exactly what haunted the Washington Capitals in a 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers in NHL action on Thursday night. Washington has played two games in a three-game series of round-robin games ahead of the NHL playoffs and so far have not played the way that they would hope too leading into that tournament.

Philadelphia was able to record a goal in each of the periods, which was led by Scott Laughton who had two goals and three points. Laughton was followed by Kevin Hayes who had three assists as the line of Laughton, Hays and Travis Konecny had themselves a tremendous outing in the game against Washington.

Washington was on the defensive end of the ice, having to kill off penalties, with all the energy focused on that the guys just weren’t able to find any rhythm on the offensive side of the ice and thus that hurt their chances of winning the game against the Flyers.

The lone goal for the Capitals came with less than 10 minutes remaining, as the team was able to earn a face-off victory. Winger Carl Hagelin was able to rifle a shot to the Philadelphia cage, that was tipped in by Travis Boyd. Philadelphia was able to do a tremendous job intercepting the puck and keeping the Capitals offense off the scoreboard.  Even strength goals is going to be something the team as a whole will be working on in practice as 11 of the 17 of the attempts in the game against the Flyers happened with all of the players on the ice.

One of the bright spots for the Capitals was the play of the keeper Braden Holtby, who made so many wonderful saves during the course of the game. One of the biggest trends during the game though was the fact that the team was not able to maintain possession of the puck, turning it over multiple times. Moments like that will get you a losing result in the National Hockey League.

The guys will have some time off and practice before the final game of the round robin schedule as they will face the Boston Bruins on Sunday.
