Sky Blue FC has struggled so far in the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup, as they fought to a tough 0-0 Draw in their first match against the OL Reign. Recently the ladies squared off against the Utah Royals and had a heartbreaking 1-0 loss.
In the match against the Reign the team evenly split the possession of the ball, having 48% and 52% of the possession respectively. Sky Blue had some beautiful plays including a great feeding connection featuring McCall Zerboni and Ifeoma Onumonu. One of the best chances for Sky Blue FC was from Nahomi Kawasumi who was able to brake through off a cross from Sabrina Flores, that opportunity was blocked by a Reign defender though.
The amazing pace of some tremendous plays and possessions continued throughout the Second Half. It was in the 70th minute that Sky Blue FC’s Elizabeth Eddy had a wonderful shot, but that opportunity was blocked by the Reign.
Sky Blue FC was able to stay solid and strong throughout the course of the match on the defensive end of the ball, as well as seeing some tremendous saves from Kailen Sheridan.
Recently Sky Blue FC challenged the Utah Royals and started on such a wonderful note, as they were able to keep the majority of the possession of the ball on the offense. Utah was able to make some great adjustments though and found the pacing that they were hoping for.
Utah broke through in the 41st minute when Vero Boquete threaded the ball through the Sky Blue defense, putting forward Amy Rodriguez in on goal. Rodriguez then slotted the ball into the right side netting from the corner of the six, giving her team the 1-0 lead to end the first half.
There were some tremendous opportunities on the Sky Blue FC end of the field, including a great play from Midge Purce who darted forward and winning her team a free-kick just outside of the 18 yard box. Domi Richardson. Sadly though the team could not find any rhythm on the offense and thus the results went to the Royals.
Again the defense was tremendous for Sky Blue FC, keeper Sheridan had a tremendous night in the cage against the Royals, as she was active off her line, intercepting crosses and shutting down attackers’ runs towards goal. It was the debut for Kaleigh Riehl and Evelyne Viens.
Sky Blue now sits in a three-way tie for sixth place in the NWSL Challenge Cup standings. The team will next face the Houston Dash this Wednesday night at 10 p.m. ET.
