Anytime you challenge the team who wins the League’s Championship you know you are going to be in for a fight, and the Washington Spirit experienced just that in the recent 2-0 loss to the North Carolina Courage in the Second Match of the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup.
The match started on a strong note for the Spirit as midfielder Andi Sullivan attempted a beautiful attempt on net from the distance, forcing Courage goalkeeper Steph Labbe to make a diving stop just three minutes into the game.
Washington continued to keep the offensive pressure on the Courage thanks to a wonderful attempt by Rose Lavelle who also attempted to try to connect from long distance around the 8th minute, but could not connect.
Neither team was able to find the back of the cage for a goal as the headed into the half. Washington was able to hold the edge of the offensive possession of the ball for 53% of the time. The Spirit saw tremendous play from Tori Huster, Paige Nielsen, Sam Staab and Tegan McGrady, who combined to keep the Courage off of the board offensively.
North Carolina was able to figure out the Spirit defense and cashed in twice thanks to Forward Lynn Williams ,to secure the victory.
