VIDEO: Tina Charles and New York Liberty Youth Sports Clinic

March 9, 2013 was a day that will always live on in the heart and mind of one Tina Charles, that was the day that the New York Liberty Center lost her Aunt Maureen ‘Hopey’ Vaz, who passed from multiple organ failure.

Vaz, who was known for her giving heart, committed most of her life to giving others and that is a trait that lives on now in Charles who on Friday February 13, 2015 took time to host a Youth Sports Clinic in Brooklyn, New York.

With not only the New York Liberty behind her as the team helped to organize the event and had greats Kym Hampton and Teresa Weatherspoon on hand; Charles also Safe Kids Worldwide and Heartsmart.com to help make it a great event.

Charles was able to interact with the 500 kids at  Arthur Cunningham Middle School, passing along the message of key issues in a fun way so that the lessons of the day, importance of hydration ~ Sports Injury prevention ~ concussions  and emergency response as all tools for them to use for the rest of their lives.

Tina has also been able to make and Impact and raise awareness for Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), which was a cause she was introduced to through the story of Wes Leonard, who was a basketball player at Fennville High in Michigan who passed from SCA in 2011.

Charles was able to learn how important it is to have an AED on the premises, now to honor her Aunt Hopey’s legacy, the Liberty star has been able to donate 48,000 to help purchase over 100 AED’s to the New York Department of Education.

Tina  has always taken time to be an advocate for advancing sports safety and raising awareness of SCA throughout the country, being in New York as a part of the 2015 NBA All-Star game, the Center was able to make a positive impact at home.
