The Pro Football Writers of America named Todd Bowles Assistant Coach of the Year on Thursday. Bowles who was also named as the Head Coach for the New York Jets was instrumental in helping the Arizona Cardinals Defense in overcoming the many obstacles they had this season as the unit as a whole improved to fifth in scoring defense this season. The Cardinals also had 25 total takeaways (18 interceptions, 7 fumble recoveries), leading to a plus-8 turnover margin, the fifth best mark in the NFL.
Arizona finished with an 11-5 record also had current Head Coach Bruce Arians as the 2014 PFWA Head Coach of the Year. There were also two Cardinals defensive players picked up PFWA honors, with S Deone Bucannon being named to the All-Rookie Team and DE Calais Campbell being named to the All-NFC Team.
For Bowles he was the first Cardinals assistant to win the award since its inception in 1993. There has been an positive reaction to Bowles being hired as not only fans but players from around the league went to social networking to welcome the newest addition to the franchise to New York.
Bowles’ defensive unit finished fifth in the NFL in points allowed per game at 18.7, tied for second in first downs allowed per game at 18.8 and third in red zone percentage at 43.9 percent despite losing DT Darnell Dockett and LB John Abraham to injury for the season and a total of 61 overall lost games to injury by defensive players. Bowles was hired as the New York Jets head coach January 14 after serving two seasons as the Cardinals’ defensive coordinator.
In addition Dallas Cowboys owner/president/general manager Jerry Jones, whose moves helped the Cowboys to their first NFC East division title since 2009, was selected as the 2014 NFL Executive of the Year.
