St. John’s Women’s Basketball Holds Off Tough UCF Team in 62-48 Victory

The St. John’s Women’s Basketball team (8-0, 1-0 BIG EAST) were able to hold off a tough UCF (4-4, 0-0 AAC) team in a 62-48 victory at Carnesseca Arena on Thursday night.

UCF had gotten off to a hot start early in the First Half of play, as St. John’s had gotten into foul trouble early on the game. The Red Storm had found their momentum and rhythm in the later part of the game tying things up at 26 at the Half thanks to some huge Free Throws by Sophomore Guard Aaliyah Lewis (Staten Island, N.Y.)

Junior Guard Aliyyah Handford (Newark, N.J) was able to record her 1,000 point in the game against UCF. With her bucket in the Second Half Handford became the second fastest player in the team’s history to reach the milestone and finished the night with 15 points.

Leading the way in scoring for St. John’s was Junior Guard Danaejah Grant (Piscataway, N.J.) who finished the night with 20 points, going 10-of-15 from the field. The Red Storm had two other players in double-digit scoring as Lewis recorded 12 points and Sophomore Forward Jade Walker (Maplewood, N.J.) tallied 11 points.

The St. John’s Women’s Basketball team will next be in action on December, 14 when they host NJIT at Carnesecca Arena, with tip-off time for that game set for 2:00 p.m.
