Brooklyn manager Tom Gamboa called a meeting before tonight’s game talking about executing with men on base. His team answered his call, as the Cyclones(39-31) exploded for 14 hits in their 8-2 victory over the Staten Island Yankess at Richmond County Bank Ball Park on Tuesday night.

“We had a brief meeting today because last night was a very tough game to lose. We pitched well, we played good defense, we had an opportunity it seemed like every inning,we just couldn’t get a big hit,” Gamboa said. “We need to really focus with men on base, which we did not do last night, and tonight as soon as we got second and third, we were able to get a ground out to get a run, and get another guy over to third, and he scored. We did all the things we didn’t do last night.”
It was in the bottom of the third inning that the Brooklyn bats came to life, as the offense plated five runs on seven hits. Brooklyn started the scoring on a bloop single by Alfredo Reyes. Following the Reyes RBI, catcher Adrian Abreu ground out to short which scored Tucker Tharp. Designated hitter Amed Rosario and third baseman Jhoan Urena joined the hit parade with RBI singles. Brooklyn’s big inning concluded on a hit by Pedro Perez which was going to third base, Staten Island third baseman Renzo Martini made an errant as he tried to get the speedy Urena back to the bag, instead Jhoan would score to give the visiting team a 5-0 lead.
Staten Island broke the shutout bid in the bottom of the fourth inning as Connor Spencer laced a double to right field. Left Fielder Chris Breen worked a walk to set the stage for Ty McFarland, who proceeded to rip an RBI double to center field to help the Baby Bombers cut the lead to 5-1.
The Cyclones were able to add on insurance runs in the top of the fifth on an Urena RBI Triple. Jhoan, who had two RBIs, then came home, on an error from Staten Island Shortstop Jose Javier, to make it 7-1. Rosario added his second RBI of the contest on an infield single that scored Reyes.
Back-to-back singles by Spencer and Breen helped the Yankees plate their second run in the bottom of the eighth inning, and that accounted for all the offense on this night-as Game 2 of this current three-game set went the way of the Brooklyn Cyclones.
For Casey Meisner and the rest of the Cyclones Pitchers who took the hill, the run support they got from the offense was more than enough. Overall the pitchers struck out 14 Yankees batters, which was led by Meisner, who went six innings, giving up one run on two hits and striking out a career-high 11 batters.
Meisner has been pitching well in August going 3-0 and he has struck out 21 batters in his last two appearances.
““I had a good mind set coming out there. The month of August has been good for me, so I’ve been trying to go deep into games, get outs, first pitch strikes is a big thing and just be comfortable out there,” the 19- year- old starter said.
Relievers Gaither Bumgardner and Eddie Villasmil both pitched well, as the duo combined to strike out three batters, while also keeping the Staten Island bats from getting a rally started.
Brooklyn and Staten Island meet again tomorrow in the regular season finale at MCU Park. First Pitch is scheduled for 7:00 P.M. Scarlyn Reyes (2-3 2.57 ERA), gets the ball for the Cyclones, who currently leads the Connecticut Tigers by two games in the Wild Card Standings.
