The Long Island Ducks (20-25) have heated up in the month of August, stringing together some huge series victories to find themselves in Second Place of the Liberty Division.
With both the York Revolution and Somerset Patriots in a firm lead for both the Freedom and Liberty Division, the hope for fans of the Flock is that the team can get a bid into the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball Championships via the Wild Card. For the Atlantic League they take the best team in the First Half of Play and the Second, but here is the interesting predicament-both York and Somerset have been a First Place Team for both halves of the season.
This is where the Wild Card comes in as the final two postseason spots would go to the two teams with the best overall records in 2014. As of August 26 both the Lancaster Barnstormers and the Sugar Land Skeeters are tied for the best record holding a 62-52 mark.
As for the Ducks they currently hold a 60-54 record, the guys will be heading down to Somerset for a huge three-game set against the Patriots.
Long Island will look to redeem a four-game home stand against the Patriots, where the guys dropped three out of the four to their longtime rivals. Every game is essential for the Ducks who look to gain the final Wild Card spot or even potentially clinch the Liberty Division in the Second Half of play.
The Ducks are very familiar with being able to make a push in the second half as in 2009 they were able to win the Second Half of the Liberty Division in 2013. If Long Island can once again make a push to the playoffs it will be the team’s fourth straight postseason berth and 10th in the past 11 seasons.
There is plenty of time and games against the Patriots to make a comeback, as there are 26 left against their rivals. With the three-game set starting on August 26, that will be a huge chance for the Ducks to make up ground.
