Islanders v Avalanche 2/8/14

Here are some notes as the New York Islanders (22-29-8) are getting ready to host the Colorado Avalanche (36-16-5) in NHL action at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

LAST GAME

2/6/14: NYI 2 vs. CGY 4
The New York Islanders lost to the Calgary Flames for the first time since Jan. 8, 2009, falling 4-2 Thursday at Nassau Coliseum. Calgary native Thomas Hickey and rookie defenseman Calvin de Haan scored for the Islanders, who rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the score, but could not overcome David Jones’ go-ahead goal with 5:32 remaining in the third period.

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP
The Islanders play their last game before the Olympic break tonight against the Colorado Avalanche. It’s the second and final meeting this season between the clubs; the Isles rallied to defeat Colorado 2-1 in Denver on a Michael Grabner overtime goal on Jan. 10. The Isles are 8-0-1-2 (W-L-T-OT) in their last 11 games against the Avs and have won six straight home games against Colorado.

TEAM NOTES:

Tonight’s Milestones: Colin McDonald is set to appear in his 100th NHL game tonight. Cal Clutterbuck is expected to play his 400th.

Back On Track: Travis Hamonic was activated off IR yesterday after missing 12 games with an upper-body injury. Hamonic has led the Islanders in TOI 19 times this season.

Career Highs: With 24 games to play, Kyle Okposo has already matched or exceeded his career highs in goals, assists and points. Frans Nielsen has surpassed his previous career high of 17 goals.

Cal Clutterbuck – 1 game shy of 400
Kyle Okposo – 4 goals shy of 100
The Islanders and Avalanche game is set to air on the MSG Plus Network, with face-off set for 7:00 p.m.
