Islanders vs. Hurricanes 2/24/13

Here are some notes for those fans who are getting ready to watch the New York Islanders (8-9-1) play host to the Carolina Hurricanes (8-7-1) in NHL action at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Islanders play in the final game of a five-in-seven stretch tonight, while also opening a seven-game home stand.

Tonight marks the second of three meetings this season between the two teams, with Carolina holding a 1-0 series edge in the 6-4 victory over the Isles on 2/11.

Isles Recap:

Evgeni Nabokov made 35 saves for his 53rd career shutout as the Islanders skated to a 4-0 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday. Scoring for New York were Mark Streit, Michael Grabner, John Tavares and Colin McDonald.

Simply the Best:

With his 12th goal of the season against the Sabres, John Tavares entered into a tie for the NHL lead in goals with Steven Stamkos, Thomas Vanek and Patrick Marleau. Only Stamkos and Sidney Crosby have more points.

Power Surge:

The Islanders power play is ranked fourth-best in the NHL with 25.3% (19-for-75). Nineteen of their 53 goals (36%) this season have come on the extra man advantage.

Islesstone reached:

Matt Moulson recorded his 200th NHL point (assist) Saturday at Buffalo.

Moulson has been able to combine with John Tavares for 21 goals, which is the most of any NHL teammates. Moulson and Tavares have combined for 44 points this season, which ranks third among NHL teammates.

The Isles and Huricanes game is set to air on the MSG Plus network, with face-off slated for 7:00 p.m.
