Tavares named NHL’s First Star of the Week

The National Hockey League announced on Monday that New York Islanders center John Tavares was named the First Star of the Week for the week ending on February 17, 2013.

Tavares, 22, tallied five goals and two assists in three games last week, leading the Islanders to a 2-1-0 record. With a goal in each game, the Mississauga, ON, native extended his goal-scoring streak to a career-high five games. The center recorded his fourth career hat trick against Metropolitan Area rivals the New Jersey Devils on Feb. 16.

The Center, who was the Islanders first overall pick in the 2009 NHL Draft is tied for sixth in the league in scoring with 20 points (11 goals, nine assists). Tavares currently leads the team in scoring, as he did in each of his first three NHL seasons.
