It was a classic goaltenders clinic between the New York Rangers (32-12-5) and the Buffalo Sabres (21-25-5) with Henrik Lundqvist ruling the cage with 34 saves in the Blueshirts 1-0 shootout victory on Wednesday.
Lundqvist earned the 40 shootout victory of his career, the third in his last five starts and the sixth blanking of the season. The King’s counterpart Ryan Miller also had a stellar night in the cage making 29 saves.
Both Buffalo and New York showed off some stingy defense, as both teams sacrificed bodies in order to earn the vital two points. The Rangers finished the night with 16 blocked shots, while the Sabres had 11.
Helping to tally the lone goal in the shootout frame was Blueshirts’ captain Ryan Callahan, who led the team with his heart and hustle. Cally led the physical play with his five hits, while also standing up for his teammates when things got heated.
Three Rangers players finished the night with three blocked shots as Dan Girardi, Ryan McDonagh and Anton Stralman all stood tall to help out in the defensive effort.
New York will now get to enjoy some time off before hosting the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday. The game between the Blueshirts and the Flyers is scheduled to air on the MSG network with face-off slated for 1:00 p.m.
