On Monday the NHL officially announced that the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers were going to be the two participants in the 2012 Winter Classic. The prestigious outdoor event will be held at Citizen’s Bank ballpark in Philadelphia.
Right after that the two teams met on the ice for the last of pre-season action for the Blueshirts, before they head to Europe. New York played a very physical game, but fell to the Flyers by a final of 5-3.
Brian Boyle was the main star for the Rangers recording a goal and an assist. Boyle helped New York get a 1-0 lead in the 2:36 mark helping on an Andreas Thuresson goal in the first period. Ex-Rangers star Jaromir Jagr tied the two teams up at 1-1 at the 9:25 mark.
Jagr opened up the second period with a power play goal at the 4:54 mark, before John Mitchell recorded his first pre-season goal for the Rangers at the 10:09 mark. These two teams stayed tied at the end of the third as Boyle made it 3-3 at the 15:02 mark.
Philly ended the game with two unanswered goals in the third period for the 5-3 victory. The Rangers now open up exhibitions games in Prague, Czech Republic before heading out to Sweden and Slovakia. New York will open the European tour with a Thursday afternoon game against HC Sparta in Prague.
