Selection Sunday is one that has fans of the Red Storm Men’s Basketball team all a buzz as it was announced that the Red Storm is going to San Diego and facing Northern Iowa in the NCAA Tournament.
This was after the team etched the names in the history books by becoming back-to-back Regular Season and Conference Championship in a thriller of a victory against UConn on March 14.
Showing a smothering defense and being able to keep the cool whenever the Huskies made any sort of offensive spurt the guys
dug the heels in to be crowned the kings of the BIG EAST in Conference play.
Some interesting facts from the St. John’s PR department include the fact that this is the fifth BIG EAST Championship for the guys and the second straight for the first time ever.
We also have the following press conference videos for our fans to enjoy:
For the UConn fans :
The Press Conference video featuring UConn Head Men’s Basketball Coach Dan Hurley and Alex Karaban
For our St. John’s fans here is a video featuring Dillon Mitchell, Oziyah Sellers, Bryce Hopkins and Zuby Ejiofor:
Zuby Ejiofor, being named as Coach Dan Healy’s one of the toughest players that he has ever had to coach against gained himself a post season award by winning the Dave Gavitt Trophy for the BIG EAST Tournament Outstanding Player. To conclude the tournament Zuby put together some impressive numbers with his 19.7 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game.
Also shining in the Championship game was Bryce Hopkins with his 18 points and Dillon Mitchell with his nine points.
Selection Sunday then came around and now there is a buzz around College Sports as to how the seeding was selected and how each team was bracketed.
Either way the Red Storm are going to be marching in with a fifth seed and facing No. 12 Northern Iowa on Friday.
This is going to be the 31st NCAA Tournament appearance for the guys and in Viejas Arena in San Diego. The start of the night is scheduled for 7:10 pm.
With a win the Red Storm may play either Kansas and 13th seeded Cal Baptist.
This is the first meeting between the two programs.
For the UNI program this is the ninth trip to the NCAA Division 1 tournament and the first since the 2016 season. The Panthers were able to win the State Farm MVC Tournament for the sixth time in program history, becoming the first team in the league to win the conference tournament.
