No. 9 St. John’s Heads To Charlotte To Take On No. 8 San Diego State

The St. John’s men’s basketball team (21-11, 10-8 BIG EAST) returns to the NCAA Tournament as it heads to Charlotte, N.C. as the No. 9 seed in the South Regional to take on No. 8 San Diego State on Friday. The second-round matchup marks the first ever meeting between St. John’s and San Diego State.

The Red Storm will be making its 28th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance, putting it among the Top-25 in the nation in total appearances. Dating back to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1951, St. John’s has accumulated a 27-29 overall record in 56 games as well as a 5-6 record in the second round. The last time the Red Storm made a NCAA Tournament appearance was in 2011 as the No. 6 seed when it took an 86-71 loss to No. 11 Gonzaga.

This season, the Red Storm has earned five wins against teams in the RPI Top 50 while four of the team’s 11 non-conference regular-season victories were against teams in the RPI Top 100 – Syracuse, Minnesota, Saint Mary’s and Long Beach State.
