Columbia Lions Roaring in 2024 Baseball Season

Thus far the Columbia University baseball team (15-13, 9-2 Ivy League) are roaring during the 2024 season, as there have been some impressive wins thus far for the Lions.

The team started to get on a bit of a roll and thus far are impressing in Ivy League Play, as they won two of a three-game series against Harvard. They were able to Sweep Penn during the month of March and then they were able to sweep Darthmouth during the month of April.

The Senior class is slugging thus far for Columbia, as leading the way with the bats is Cole Hage as he has a .359 batting average, an impressive .680 slugging percentage and 37 hits thus far.
Classmate Jack Cooper has a .333 batting average, a .718, 12 HR and 39 hits. Junior

Griffin Palfrey currently ranks third on the team with his .317 batting average, .508 slugging and 20 hits.

As for the pitching they are led by Derek Yoo as he shined in the team’s opening game against Yale on Saturday, April 13. Thus far Yoo has a 3-1 record,4.10 ERA while striking out 29 batters.

It was an exciting double header between Columbia and Yale at Robertson Field at Satow Field, as both teams flexed some offensive muscle to impress those in attendance.

The first game between the two Ivy League Schools Yale came back from a 7-0 deficit to win the game 10-8. Then in Game Two Columbia were able to keep the Yale bats at bay and won by a score of 10-3.

As the game started to get underway Columbia sported some nifty Lou Gehrig ALS T-Shirts to raise awareness for the disease.

Prior to Gehrig’s time with the Yankees and setting his historic record of 2,130 games played; Gehrig was known as Columbia Lou. Turns out Lou attended Columbia College from 1921 to 1923 as he was a two-sport athlete playing both football and baseball.

There was also a special moment for the Lions as they honored the 2014 Ivy League Championship team, as well as Head Coach Brett Boretti during the course of the double header.

Getting back to the action in Game One in terms of the bats Columbia Outfielder Skye Selinsky led the way with his three hits, two RBIs and two runs, Palfrey had two hits, two RBIs and two runs.

In Game Two was led by INF Eric Jeon with his three hits, three RBIs and two runs. Hage recorded two hits and RBI and Cooper had two hits and an RBI.

Columbia and Yale wrap up a three-game series on Sunday, April 4 at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium with the start of the first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
