New York Liberty win OT thriller against Connecticut, 95-90

It was a thrilling night for the New York Liberty, as the ladies overcame a 20-point deficit in the 95-90 Overtime victory against the Connecticut Sun in WNBA action on Thursday.

With the team’s comeback, the ladies have been able to tie the record for the largest overcome deficit in a win in franchise history. In addition, the team just clinched the four-game series against the Sun.

Suns have become way more aggressive on the court. With playoffs right around the corner the Sun have secured their spots as the Third best team in the W. Suns have already secured a championship ring something that Liberty is seeking this season. With the franchises 23-11 record, the Sun are definitely one of the teams the Liberty are going to keep an eye on.

Leading the way for Connecticut is DeWanna Bonner had a game -high 30 points and 12 rebounds. There has been a ton of talk about WNBA MVP and the Sun’s Alyssa Thomas is looking to put her name in that race, her 22 points, a game-high 12 assists, seven rebounds, and three steals against a team the caliber of New York is hopefully something that can help her case. The Suns were on a mission to get this victory against Liberty. 

“It took them a while to wake up, we were not executing that much. We are either going to compete or we are going down beat,” said Head Coach Sandy Brondello.

Suns had a 20-point lead against the Liberty in the Second Half of the game. After five days off there was no way that Liberty was going to just hand over the win even with a 20-point lead. 

“We’ve been in this position before and we continue to fight through it. Until we wake up and play together on a strength, we have to do what we have to do defensively to make it difficult for them. Push the pace,” said Breanna Stewart.

Stewart is the second in the WNBA when it comes to scoring made her 15th double-double of the season, as she tallied 24 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and two steals. The game that Stewie plays is going to lead her to continuously make franchise history.  With just eight more games to play Stewart may beat her 2018, 742 points record. 

Jonquel Jones showed her MVP form in the Second Half of game is where she scored most of her 21 points with 14 rebounds, and two blocks.

Sabrina Ionescu totaled 18 points, four rebounds, and four assists. During the game for Ionescu, Fourteen of her 18 points were scored during the fourth quarter and in overtime. Courtney Vandersloot added 13 points on 41.7% (5-12) shooting from the field, eight assists, and three rebounds.

Next up for the New York Liberty continue the road trip in Minnesota to take on the Lynx on Saturday August 26 at 8:00 p.m. All of the action is going to be on the YES Network.
