Washington Mystics getting Close to Playoff form in tough loss to Connecticut

The Washington Mystics (15-18) are getting closer and closer with each performance that they put on the court to being a playoff bound team, they just need one thing to start going their way results. In the team’s latest game against the Connecticut Sun (23-10) the ladies left all of their effort on the court but fell by a final of 68-64.

The ladies got so close around the 2:01 mark in the Fourth Quarter, as Shakira Austin tied the game up on a sweet jumper, ultimately it was Connecticut and the team’s stellar defense eventually locking down the victory.

There are a ton of encouraging signs along with performances in the game as leading the way is Natasha Cloud with her 19 points, four rebounds, five assists and a steal.

Here is an impressive note for Cloud as she recorded one steal in 14 of her last 15 games, averaging 1.7 steals per game, which ranks ninth in the WNBA during that span.

Cloud had a milestone moment in the game as with her 19 points she passed Nikki McCray-Penson (1921) to become eighth on the Mystics all-time scoring list. After tonight, she has totaled 1929 career points.

Cloud being drafted by the team feels a special connection and bond with McCray-Penson, as the duo have a special light and a way of being able to make people smile. Natasha reflected on that milestone and what it means for her to be a member of the Mystics.

Fans can check out what Cloud along with Head Coach Eric Thibault and Shakira Austin had to say by checking out the video seen below…video is compliments of the Washington Mystics:

Austin, playing in her first game since June 25 finished the contest with 13 points, seven rebounds, two steals and a block.

In other impressive performances Queen Egbo led the team in rebounding with eight plus and did so for the sixth time this season along with the third time with the team. Also, having an impressive performance in her first year with the team is Li Meng as she leads all rookies in total three-point shots made.

As a team the defense, especially in the fourth quarter put on a great show, as they limited the Sun to just 10 points. This is the least points the team has allowed in the fourth quarter this season, along with the second-least points allowed in any quarter for the team this season.

The road to the 2023 WNBA Playoffs isn’t going to get any easier for this Mystics squad as the ladies next take on the WNBA Super Team the Las Vegas Aces on Saturday, August 26 at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington D.C. Start time between the Mystics and Aces is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
