New York City FC finds tough return to MLS action with 2-0 loss to Minnesota United

With there being a ton of positive energy and new faces on the roster New York City FC (5-9-110 returned to MLS action and fell to Minnesota United (8-8-7) by a final of 2-0 in MLS action at Citi Field.

There were a ton of positives about the night though, as fans got to see the debut of Birk Risa in the team’s defensive alignment, along with the return of Maxi Moralez. In addition, Monsef Bakrar continues to show positive results, as he and Moralez combined for some quality chances throughout the night.

Bakrar was featured predominately as the night progressed, but sadly he was not able to finish, but just seeing the Algerian forward gaining opportunity is something that is a positive for fans of the Boys in Blue (or in the night on Sunday Green, as the team was wearing the new Parks Kit).

It wasn’t until the second half of play, when the first goal of the night was recorded, though it was from Minnesota United. Around the 53rd minute it was the visiting side that took the lead on a goal by Ján Gregus.

In what was a hair puling moment, it had seemed as if NYCFC scored the tying goal thanks to Bakrar, with his strong finish. Sadly, the offside flag denied him of his first MLS goal.

NYCFC kept on husting though and showed a great quality, especially in the 70th minute on a great chance by Santi Rodriguez narrowly missing the goal.

Even though the Boys in Blue made their best attempts it was Minnesota United adding onto their lead at the 90′ +5′ mark as Mènder Garcia capped off the three points for the visitors.

The team has some time to continue their training and bonding, as they have a tough test against one of MLS’ best clubs in FC Cincinnati on Saturday, August 26 with the start of the match scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
