New York Red Bulls win 1-0 thriller over D.C. United

In what was a thrilling night at Red Bull Arena the New York Red Bulls (7-9-8) defeated D.C. United (8-11-6) in MLS action.

Netting the game winner is John Tolkin, as he curled in a free kick from outside the 18 in the latest memorable moments between these two MLS Franchises.

For Tolkin the goal was the first of the season, to go along with the fourth of his career. In addition John has scored two career goals against D.C. United.

It is a memorable night for Tolkin, as the Chatham, New Jersey native became the youngest to score directly from a free kick at 21 years and 20 days old.

Tolkin along with Andrés Reyes were named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for Matchday 27 thanks to their fine performance against D.C. United.

Reyes did a great job of guarding D.C.’s leading goal scorer, Christian Benteke, as there was not a shot on goal the whole night.

In what was the 88th regular season meeting and it was one that was filled with action from the start of the match to the final whistle.

The victory for the Red Bulls gets them closer to the playoff line, and the best news for fans of the franchise is the fact that there are ten more matches to play.

Thus far the Red Bulls have been playing great in front of their home crowd, as they are undefeated in the last five matches.

One of the reasons why the team is finding success is the goalkeeping play of Carlos Coronel, as he now has seven on the season. Coronel is tied for fifth most shutouts in the league.

Here are some other impressive stats for Carlos, as he has his 27th career MLS shutouts with the franchise, in addition with him tallying his 35th win in his career, which is three shy of passing Tim Howard for third most in franchise history.

Another reason for the team’s success is the Coaching Style of Troy Lesesne, as he has a 4-0-0 record against major club rivals across all competitions (NYCFC, D.C. United) during his tenure. When Lesesne was appointed as the team’s Head Coach in May the results have been positive, as the guys have been playing a great brand of soccer as of late.

After the team’s latest victory, the guys are next preparing for Inter Miami, that has a new look to them as they have been able to acquire soccer great Lionel Messi to their squad. That match is going to be happening on Saturday, August 26, and on that day the team is going to debut the new Freestyle Kit to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop.

All of the action is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Red Bull Arena, with fans wanting to catch the action can do so on Apple TV.
