In the Final Game of the three-game matchup between New York Liberty and Phoenix Mercury. It is the Liberty ending their road trip out West with a win, 85-63.
With the victory Head Coach Sandy Brondello tied with former head Liberty Coach Anne Donovan (2009–10) with the eighth most coaching wins in WNBA history.
In what was an incredible shooting performance Liberty saw Marine Johannès scoring 14 points in the first half of the game and ended with a season high of 18 points for the third time this season.
Betnijah Laney scored shooting from the floor at 69.2% (9-13) scored 22 points in Fridays night’s game, four rebounds, 2 assists and two steals.
“We made their shots a lot tougher making them not able to transition which we kind of gave up on in the first half,” said Laney on going up against Phoenix.

Sabrina Ionescu impressed in the game against Phoenix as she totaled 18 points on 53.8% (7-13) shooting from the floor, seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists. With her two makes from beyond tonight, she is now 12 threes away from eclipsing the WNBA’s all-time single-season threes record of 121 threes, set in 2006.
Rounding out the Liberty scorers is Breanna Stewart with her 12 points, eight rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.
“Understanding that we have a lot of great players on the court. Everyone can do their own thing. Making sure we open up the court for not just Stewie and everybody else on the court. Staying together as a team,” said Jonquel Jones.
Phoenix Mercury saw Brittney Griner and Megan Gustafson were both out Fridays nights game for health and safety protocols. Liz Dixon was signed on hardship contract to help make up the teams nine players. With two of the biggest players gone the pressure was on for the Mercury.
The Mercury saw some impressive performances starting with Diana Taurasi and her 14 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while Sophie Cunningham added 14 points and seven rebounds.
Liberty will finally have some much-needed time to rest up after playing five games in eight days. After their five-day break the New York Liberty go on the road to take on the Connecticut Sun and that matchup takes place August 24 starting at 7:00 p.m.
