New York Liberty edged out by Phoenix, 84-81

In what was a back-and-forth basketball game, the New York Liberty (9-13) were just edged out by the Phoenix Mercury (10-14) in WNBA action on Thursday night.

Both teams played a fast paced and exciting style of basketball, in a game that featured some beautiful passing, hustle plays and some wonderful shooting. In the end it was the Mercury who were able to earn the victory thanks to some stellar team play.

As for the Liberty they were able to compile some impressive stats as they had a 42.3% shooting night from the field, while also had a 87% night from the free throw line.

There were four players on the Liberty that had double figures, as Sabrina Ionescu, Natasha Howard and Stefanie Dolson along with Sami Whitcomb all had stellar performances. 

Leading the way was Ionescu, who had a team-high 22 points, that included a 50% shooting performance from deep to go along with a game-high 10 rebounds and three assists. Natasha Howard follows with 16 points along with seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal.

Stefanie Dolson also had 16 points on a 77.8 shooting from the field, and then rounding out all the scoring was Sami Whitcomb had 12 points on 57 shooting from the field.

Up next for the  New York Liberty will open the second half of the WNBA season at home with a two-game set against the Las Vegas Aces beginning on Tuesday, July 12 at 7 p.m. ET.
