Historic Home Court Advantage aids New York Liberty in victory over Las Vegas

With a roaring crowd of 11, 418 fans all supporting and cheering on the New York Liberty (22-6) the energy within the Barclays Center helped to lift the ladies to a 99-61 victory against the Las Vegas Aces (24-3) in WNBA action on Sunday, August 6.

There was a ton of positivity around the team, as the team also held their Health Fair prior to the game. The Women’s Health Fair was presented by Empire BlueCross BlueShield consisting of Mammogram screenings provided by Mount Sinai, along with ShapeUp NYC dance class programming.

In addition, the team participated in a cool charitable event in the game, as with the six-assist recorded by Courtney Vandersloot in the game vs the Aces, the team donated $500 to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. The team wanted to bring awareness and support to the cause, that has thus far received $3000. For the remainder of the regular season the team pledges to donate $100 for each assist by Sloot will also be donated to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.

“My Mom was diagnosed about a year ago and this was a way for me to make impact,” said Vandersloot of participating in the program.

There was also a ton of excitement in the game as well as the crowd of 11, 418 in attendance turned out to be the Liberty’s largest crowd since moving to Barclays Center.

Looking to see how they stacked up against one of the WNBA Super Teams, the Liberty looked unstoppable, as they ending the game with a 38-point lead.

Sabrina Ionescu wowed the crowd with her season-high five three-point shots, scoring an incredible 23 points in the first half of the game and finishing the contest with game-high 31 points on 63.2% (12-19) shooting from the field, including 60% (6-10) from deep, seven assists, and five rebounds.

“We really protected the paint tonight; we did a good job. We had activity, we tracked deflections, we are more disruptive, and everyone was on the same page. Great defensive teams isn’t about one player it’s about everyone doing their jobs,” said Coach Sandy Brondello about the way her team played in the game.

In addition, A’ja Wilson contributed with nine points, as overall the Liberty’s defense did a great job against the Aces potent offense.
