Super Teams they call them in the W. Yes, indeed there has been a lot of hype around the Las Vegas Aces & New York Liberty, all of the hype leads up to a game played on August 15 in Las Vegas for the Third Commissioner’s Cup. The WNBA Commissioner’s Cup is a competition between the Western and Eastern Conference presented by Coinbase.
Featuring a 500,000 pool in the Commissioner’s Cup game players will have a chance to add more money to their salary and at least $165,000 will be donated to the charities that the Liberty and the Aces choose. The Aces are the top team in the Western Conference with 24 wins and only 2 loses, as they are holding the Commissioner’s Cup Championship from the 2021 win against the Chicago Sky.
In preparation for the Commissioner’s Cup Las Vegas Aces stars Jackie Young & Chelsea Gray the 2022 Commissioners Cup MVP stated that they watch a lot of film with the team; and individually to sharpen up their defense.
The 2023 Commissioner’s Cup is going to be one of the most anticipated games of the season, in addition to the two additional regular season games that feature the Aces playing Liberty on August 6 and 28. That makes things three games in where the WNBA Super Teams are going to play against each other.
“A lot of people will be tuned in, there are a lot of great players from both teams,” said Chelsea Gray of the upcoming matchup.
Las Vegas Aces Coach Becky Hammond started her career playing with the New York Liberty is going to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023. How legendary is Hammond well she is also enshrined in the “Liberty Ring of Honor,” where her jersey was retired. Hammond was also the Coach of the Year in 2022 and becoming the WNBA player to grab that title in her first year of Coaching. It is going to be an epic Coaching Battle as Liberty Coach Sandy Brondello also holds that title.
The game is not just about the players but also the coaches. When it comes down to it Hammond and Brondello, they are two of the best in the WNBA. Both with high performances as former players and now coaches.
“The matchup will be exciting because they are the best team in the league, and we are going to get a chance to see how much we have grown,” said Sabrina Ionescu of going up against the Aces.
“Rebounding is going to be a key when it comes to playing the Aces.” said Jonquel Jones. “When we are not scoring the ball, they are playing so fast and transitions, so we are not really able to load up. Not being able to affect the ball the way that want to defensively. “
Liberty and Aces will go head-to-head in their second season game on August 6 at the Barclays Center before the head to Vegas for the Commissioner’s Cup. Sunday’s game will give us an inside look on the performance we will see between both teams and why they are the WNBA Super Teams.
