With the start of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup drawing closer and closer to starting, there is a ton of excitement and eyes on this years tournament.
For the USWNT all of the eyes are on them, as this years team is looking to win the tournament for the third time, with a great legacy to try to uphold there is a ton of pressure on this years’ squad.
Two of the newer members of the USWNT in Emily Fox and Sophia Smith sat down with members of the media on Wednesday to reflect on the emotions of being with such a historical team with members of the media…soccer fans are encouraged to check out the video below to hear from both Fox and Smith. The resume for Smith is an impressive one, as at 22-years old she has already won the NWSL MVP, the NWSL Championship MVP and the U.S. Soccer Player of the Year Award. There have been so many incredible moments thus far for Sophia with the Portland Thorns.
During the 2023 NWSL season Smith has scored a league-leading 10 goals along with being second in the league with five assists.
Thus far Smith leads the league in total shots (59) and shots-on-goal (38). Sophia is going to be one of many that USWNT Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski may call upon to lead the offensive attack for the squad.
As for Fox, the defender has starred in both her time in College with the University of North Carolina along with her time in the NWSL playing with both Racing Louisville and the North Carolina Courage.
Fox has made two College Cup appearances, while also earning First Team All-ACC honors three-years in a row in addition to being a Hermann Trophy semifinalist. In addition Emily ranks among some of the top defensive players and hopes to contribute to the USWNT squad.
Up first for the ladies is going to be a match against Vietnam on Friday, July 21 at Eden Park in Auckland / Tāmaki Makaurau at 1 p.m. NZT along with airing at 9 p.m. ET on Friday, July 21 on Fox, Telemundo, Universo and Peacock.
