Gotham FC feeling positive in tie with Angel City FC

One of the things about soccer is that there isn’t always going to be a result, it is about how the team is able to step up and deal with adversity, with the ups and downs of the season.

Gotham FC has been able to respond to the call of whenever there has been a challenge, building a brand that most of the ladies along with Head Coach Juan Carlos Amorós can be proud of.

Without most of the players who got the call to the call to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Gotham FC played well in the team’s 0-0 draw against Angel City FC in NWSL action at Red Bull Arena on July 2.

With the Sun beaming down on the ladies, and the weather turning out to be a beautiful one, even though the weather was predicted for otherwise. and the stars coming through as Gotham FC owner and WNBA Legend Sue Bird served as Honorary Captain, and Illustrator and Model Monica Ahanonu, as the team wore the warmups she designed on the field, and Hollywood star Hannah Waddingham all showing up to support.

Sadly, the stars were unaligned on the soccer field as Gotham FC didn’t have the scoring touch in the 0-0 draw against Angel City, though there were so many moments that had left fans sitting at the edge of their seats.

Both Gotham FC Abby Smith and Angel FC Didi Haračić showed why they rank as amongst the NWSL top goalkeepers by making some spectacular plays during the course of the match.

One of the more memorable moments for Smith came around the 25th minute as Savannah McCaskill attempted a near-range shot, it was in that moment that Abby made the save with her left leg much to the delight of those in attendance at Red Bull Arena.

Then the oohs and ahhs kept going when Gotham FC forward Yazmeen Ryan blasted a shot at the 29th minute that was saved by Haračić.

There was a ton of back-and-forth action between the squad as they went into the locker scoreless.
As they came onto the pitch to start the Second Half, that was when both teams made the call for subs and fresh legs. The impact player for Gotham FC was the stylings of Midge Purce, as she made an immediate impact when she came into the game.

Busting out some video game moves, Purce beat defenders on the dribble on multiple occasions. It was also in the 66th minute when Midge attempted a shot that was saved by Haračić .

The teams continued their fine style of play, but ultimately neither was able to find a goal, even though there were a ton of positive feelings about the match, especially the fact that the ladies were able to step up and play well without most of their regulars in the lineup.

There were a ton of memorable moments in the match including the 200th appearance for midfielder McCall Zerboni, as she became the second player in NWSL history to achieve this feat. In addition it was the 100th appearance for Angel City’s Savannah McCaskill and the return to the field for Gotham FC Mana Shim.

Overall, it was a wonderful day of soccer and memories for all at Red Bull Arena, as the ladies now get back to training and getting ready for the next home match. That match is going to take place on July 9 at Red Bull Arena, as Gotham FC takes on the ultra-tough Portland Thorns in NWSL action with the time of the kickoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
