Gotham FC and Washington Spirit Battle to 1-1 Draw on Sunday

In the battle of the East Coast NWSL Rivals, Gotham FC and the Washington Spirit battled it out to a 1-1 draw in NWSL action on Sunday at Audi Field.


Thankfully for those who are Gotham FC fans the team is able to remain at the top of the table with the draw, as they have 17 points.


Gotham FC got on the scoreboard in the opening minutes when defender Bruninha found the back of the net in the 22′ thanks to an assist by Taylor Smith. NY/NJ side tried to increase their lead around the 54′ when Yazmeen Ryan made a diving header that went into the net. Unfortunately for fans of Gotham FC that goal was disallowed upon the VAR review.

Thus far Gotham FC has played well on the road as 11 of their 12 goals have come when they are on another team’s turf. 2023 has been a stellar year thus far for the ladies, as they have been able to score more goals this season than they did in 2015 (10), 2019 (9) and 2022 (8).



Fans at Audi Field, creating an festive atmosphere got to see their team tie up the game in the 69′ when Paige Metayer found the back of the net.


There was a milestone moment for the Spirit as Ashley Sanchez made her 50th career regular season appearance-all with the same team. Sanchez becomes the 18th Spirit player to reach 50 appearances.
After some back-and-forth action, when the final whistle blew things remained a 1-1 draw, and both walked away with the point.


Up next for Gotham FC is going to be a treat, as the team has been able to break the ticket sale record at Red Bull Arena for the match on June 4. That is when the ladies are going to go up against Alex Morgan and the San Diego Wave. The start of the action between these two clubs is set for 5:30 p.m.


As for the Washington Spirit they are going to next be in action on June 3, when they host Racing Louisville for a match at Audi Field that is set for 8:00 p.m.
