United and Arsenal are two of the most famous and successful clubs in English football, as they have 114 major trophies between the franchises along with a history of playing brilliant soccer against the other.
These two clubs are familiar foes, as they have been in the same division in English football since 1919, with things starting to heat up during the 1990’s and 2000’s as they were frequently at the top of the table for the Premier League and FA Cup.
Some of the more memorable encounters for the clubs included the match they played in 2011, when the Red Devils saw an 8-2 decision over the Gunners.
In that match Wayne Rooney tallied a stunning hat-trick to go along with goals from Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck, Nani and Park Ji-sun. That match is thought of as one of Arenal’s toughest defeats in 84 years. The last time the Gunners had a loss like that was a 0-7 defeat to West Ham United in a match that took place in 1927.
During the 2005 season Manchester United won a close 4-2 decision, as the match started off with a clash prior to the kick-off as Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira got into a verbal confrontation. That interaction is to this day known as one of the more memorable ones in Premier League, and that had gotten Viera fired-up as he was one of the goal scorers in the night.
Also recording goals were Ryan Giggs, Dennis Bergkamp, Cristiano Ronaldo, John O’Shea and Manuel Almunia.
One of the more memorable matches for the fans of the Gunners is when the guys defeated the Red Devils 1-0 during the 1998 season. That was one of the more significant victories of the 1997/98 season.
In that one Marc Overmars recorded a goal later in the match, that proved to be a huge one for both franchises.
Now the fans in the United States will have a chance to see these two historic franchises in action., as these clubs have never played the other in the US.
