Gotham sitting at the Top of the Table with 4-1 victory over OL Reign

There has been so much momentum along with stellar soccer played by the ladies of Gotham FC, and thanks to that and the 4-1 victory over the reigning Supporters’ Shield winners OL reign, the ladies are now in first place in the National Women’s Soccer League Standings.

Gotham FC, as they currently have 16 points, can now say they have a taste of what it is like to be in first place.

Fans are encouraged to check out the following video featuring Head Coach Juan Carlos Amorós...video is compliments of Gotham FC:

The last time that Gotham Fc sat at the top of the table was on July 21, during the 2013 season. The team was very different then as they were known as Sky Blue FC, while the roster being shaped differently as Kristie Mewis was an NWSL rookie, and current star Bruninha was 11 years old at the time.

There has been a ton of positive changes for the franchise since then and all for the positive, as the team has built not only a supportive but winning culture.

Things started early for the franchise as Jenna Nighswonger, cranked a shot on distance for the first goal of the night at the 10th minute of the match. Getting the assist on that goal is Mewis. The goal for Nighswonger is the second thus far, while also it being the second time, she has scored in the first half.

Minutes later Lynn Williams busted out some video game moves, beating her defender and found the back left corner for the second goal of the night. That second goal is the fastest in club history.

Williams shared these thoughts after scoring a goal on her birthday on 5/21…video is compliments of Gotham FC:

The Goal for Williams is a special one in more ways than one as not only is she tied for first place in the league, in addition the Forward was able to score on her birthday. Williams fares well when it comes time for scoring goals on her birthday, as she has been able to tally three thus far (scoring one during the 2016, while on the WNY Flash and in 2017, while playing for the North Carolina Courage).

After some great action Gotham FC tallied their third goal in the 38th minute, on thanks to some beautiful passing as the ball got to Taylor Smith with a stellar shot.

Rounding out the scoring is Brazilian National Team defender Bruninha, notched her first NWSL career goal, finding the back of the cage from close range.

Helping to set up that goal is Midfielder Delanie Sheehan, and she shared these thoughts with the media after the team’s victory:

In the net Abby Smith made some fantastic saves on the OL Reign. Even though the Reign scored a goal in the 77th minute thanks to Jordyn Huitema, Smith was able to keep one of the top teams in the league at bay.

Now the ladies are going to face an interesting test as they go on the road to take on the Washington Spirit at Audi Field on May 28. They are going to go up against a hungry Spirit squad, as they were undefeated until their last match against Orlando.

The biggest question is how the ladies of Gotham FC can continue their fine play and on the road at Audi Field, which is always a tough place to play.

Start for the match between Gotham and the Spirit is set for 5:00 pm.
