New York Liberty Electrifies Home Crowd with Victory over Indiana, 90-73

Playing in front of a rocking crowd at the Barclays Center the New York Liberty (1-1) responded in fine style with a 90-73 victory over the Indiana Fever (0-2) in WNBA action on Sunday.

Wearing red sneakers in honor of her daughter Ruby, Breanna Stewart clicked her ruby red slippers in returning home to the New York area and made a lasting impact in the first game that she played with the squad.

The Syracuse-native now has her name in the New York Liberty record books in finishing the night with a franchise-high 45 points on 71.4% shooting from the floor. That includes a whopping 66.7% (6-9) from deep, 12 rebounds and three steals.

The 45 performance is the second-most all-time by a home player in the Barclays Center debut (that is on both the Liberty and the Nets).

Overall, though, the one thing that Head Coach Sandy Brondello and the rest of the ladies on the team can hang their hat on is that most of the squad were not only able to step on the floor, but also contribute in a manner that was positive to the game.

Making their New York debuts Jonquel Jones and Courtney Vandersloot had a fine night. Jones scored the first two points in the game, finished with 14 points on 60% (6-10) shooting from the floor.

Vandersloot, meanwhile recorded 11 points on 50% shooting that included another highlight style shot in the First Quarter. In addition, Courtney created a ton of plays adding eight assists, and helped on the boards by grabbing eight.

Indiana meanwhile had themselves some fine showings as well as NaLyssa Smith finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Aliyah Boston added 15 points and four rebounds.

Fans both at the Barclays Center and watching abroad had a glimpse of what the ‘Super Team’ can do when they start working together, and boy is it a thing of beauty.

Starting with the team’s fine defensive play, then adding along some of the sweeting passing that has been seen and all finishing off with shooting that would make any team shutter in their kicks, the Liberty are going to be a team to watch for as the WNBA Season progresses.

The next step for the Liberty is how they can continue the momentum that they have, they are going to next be in action is going to be on May 27, as they take on the Connecticut Sun at the Barclays Center. Tip time is set for 1:00 p.m.
