Undefeated as Washington Spirit stand tall against Angel City

In front of an electric crowd in Los Angeles, even though there were a ton of odds that were stacked against them the Washington Spirit were able to stay undefeated in their 1-0 victory over Angel City in NWSL action.

Both the Spirit and Angel City were able to play a great style of soccer, as they battled for control of the ball. The Spirit were the first team to get a quality opportunity thanks to Ashley Hatch and a shot that was plucked away by Angel City keeper DiDi Haračić.

The Spirit did not relent as Sam Staab connected with Ashley Sanchez for a great opportunity. Sanchez was one of the stars in that frame as she had two shots in the first 25 minutes.

Angel City responded quickly though as in the 28th minute Madison Hammond sent a ball that was high of the cage. The host had themselves tremendous chances as the night progressed, as the Spirits defense warded off three corners in a three-minute timespan.

There were a ton of adjustments made by both squads as they got onto the pitch after halftime, as Angel City started on a strong note. Savannah McCaskill led the way by creating a great opportunity. Later on Angel City’s 2023 number one overall pick Alyssa Thompson had an opportunity that went outside the net.

Amber Brooks kept the momentum going for the hosts, by sending a hard-hit ball from outside the goal that just missed the cage.
Even though Angel City had the momentum, it was the Spirit that converted on their golden opportunity in the 74th, as Ashley Hatch got the game-winner. Thus far Hatch has been playing tremendously for the spirit as the forward is leading all scorers in the Golden Boot race. Thus far in the penalty attempts Hatch is six-for-six, with the last three goals coming from the penalty kicks.

Thanks to the huge victory the Spirit are now the lone undefeated team in the NWSL, in addition the ladies are sitting alone at the top of the table. The addition good news is that the ladies were able to pick up their first victory over Angel City in the all-time series history.

Up next the ladies head to Orlando to take on the Pride for the second time in three games. That match is set to take place on May 20 with the star time scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
