It was three thrilling games for the New York Mets (10-6) as they were able to sweep the Oakland Athletics (3-13) in what is a strong start to their West Coast Trip.
Starting on Friday the Mets played small ball in working 17 walks in the 17-6 Game One victory. Helping to lead the way on the offensive side of the field is Francisco Lindor. as he had himself a 2-for-5 day, as the infielder hit a homer, ripped a double, worked the walk and drove in seven runs.
Other strong showings included the Starling Marte 2-for-2 day at the dish, as the outfielder ripped a double and plated in three runs. In addition Brandon Nimmo had a 2-for-4 day at the dish, as he laced a double and drove in two runs.
In game two it was Jackie Robinson Day for the Mets and all of Major League Baseball, as everyone paid tribute to the man who is the first African American to play ball. This game was a bit closer for the guys as they earned the 3-2 victory.
Helping to lead the way on the mound was Carlos Carrasco, as he went five innings and striking out three batters. Nimmo continued his fine batting by getting two hits and driving in a run, while Pete Alonso and Mark Canha combined to drive in the other runs.
The finale between the Mets and Athletics was one that is going to be remembered for a while. Prior to the start of the action Oakland took time out to recognize those who won the 1973 World Series as the stars of that game took center stage once more.
Those in attendance included Reggie Jackson, Vida Blue and Rollie Fingers.
It took extra innings to determine the winner, but somehow-someway the New York Mets were able to get the game-winning hit thanks to the combination of stellar defense and some fine pitching.
One of the stars of the final game was Brandon Nimmo who had a diving play in center field.
As for the offense they were led by Lindor who had himself a blast to left field and Alonso, who had himself a monster shot in the Top of the Ninth Inning that was able to tie up the game at 3.
Playing some small ball in the Top of the 10th the Mets had back-to-back-to back walks. One of those walks drawn by Lindor plated in the run that helped lift New York to the victory.
Having a great day on the mound was pitcher Jose Butto, as he went five innings and striking out two batters. One of the things to watch for with Butto is his slider, as that is what had gotten him the call to New York to start with and that pitch will be huge to his success during the 2023 season.
Up next the Mets will take on Hollywood as they head to Los Angles as they go up against the Dodges in a three-game series starting on Monday.
All three games are hopefully going to be pitchers’ dues starting with the one on Monday as David Peterson (0-2, 4.91 ERA) takes on Dustin May (1-1, 1.47 ERA). Game One from Dodger Stadium is set to start at 10:10 p.m.
