The New York Liberty made themselves a blockbuster trade as they were able to acquire 2021 WNBA MVP Jonquel Jones from the Connecticut Sun along with forward Kayla Thornton from the Dallas Wings.
In this deal the Dallas Wings were able to gain forward Natasha Howard while reserving right to guard Crystal Dangerfield from New York, while Connecticut added Rebecca Allen, along with the Liberty’s Number 6 Draft pick and Tyasha Harris to the team.
“Adding Jonquel and Kayla to our roster in the prime of their careers was a can’t-miss opportunity to bolster our frontcourt on both ends of the floor,” said Liberty General Manager Jonathan Kolb. “JJ brings an established MVP skill set, and Kayla possesses a rare combination of defensive physicality and offensive spacing. We can’t wait to welcome them to the Liberty family and get to work on pursuing our championship goals.”
Jones, who has been known to be a great low post presence in the WNBA, brings six years of experience along with a stellar resume.
In her career Jones has been able to win the 2021 WNBA MVP Award, made an appearance in four WNBA All-Star Games, had earned three All-WNBA Second Team Honors, won three WNBA Peak Performer Rebounding titles, two All-Defensive First Team nods, among many of the other awards.
Jonquel has been a well rounded player averaging 13.6 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.6 assist and 1.4 blocks per game while converting on a combined 51.1% shooting from the floor and 37.7% from three. Through 196 regular season contests, including 149 stars Jones had helped the Sun to a 126-70 record.
Thornton is going to be an exciting player to watch for the Liberty, as the forward brings six years of experience, that includes 194 regular season games, 132 starts where she was able to compile 7.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists pers game.
