The St. John’s Men’s Basketball team will look to snap its three-game slide on Tuesday when the Johnnies host Marquette (11-4, 3-1 BIG EAST) at Carnesecca Arena. FS1 will carry the national telecast at 6:30 p.m. with Dave Sims and Sarah Kustok on the call.
An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Tarik Turner will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John’s Red Storm mobile app. St. John’s radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM channel 380 and channel 970 on the SiriusXM app.
The first 2,000 fans to enter Carnesecca Arena on Tuesday will receive a cup cooler courtesy of Coca Cola. St. John’s (11-4, 1-3 BIG EAST) looks to bounce back after dropping an 88-66 road contest to Seton Hall. Senior Joel Soriano matched his career-high with 23 points shooting 10-of-14 from the field to go with 11 boards for his 12th double-double of the season. David Jones and Andre Curbelo chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively, to round out the Johnnies in double figures.
The Johnnies will look for their ninth win in 10 contests at Carnesecca Arena this season. St. John’s has averaged 82.6 points per contest while holding opponents to 67.1 points per game in its nine games in Queens. Jones has led St. John’s averaging 16.1 points in home games this season. As a team, the Johnnies are shooting 47.8 percent from the field inside Carnesecca Arena.
St. John’s has won four of its last six games against Marquette in New York City and two of the last three meetings inside Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm’s last victory over Marquette in Queens was on Jan. 1, 2019 when Shamorie Ponds recorded 26 points in a 20-point rout of the No. 16-ranked Golden Eagles.
Tuesday’s contest marks the 41st meeting between the Red Storm and the Golden Eagles with Marquette holding a 24-16 advantage in the series. Last season, the teams met just once after a contest scheduled for Dec. 29, 2021 in Queens was postponed due to COVID and was not rescheduled. In the regular-season finale, Marquette came away with an 85-77 victory in Milwaukee, despite Dylan Addae-Wusu’s team-high 19 point performance on 8-of-10 shooting with three 3-pointers.
Marquette enters the midweek showdown having won five of its last six games with its only setback coming in overtime at Providence. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 68-66 win on New Year’s Eve at Villanova. Sophomore guard Stevie Mitchell tallied a game-high 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting, while the team’s leading scorer Kam Jones chipped in 14 points against the Wildcats.
The Golden Eagles lead the BIG EAST and rank ninth in Division I with a 1.59 assist-to-turnover ratio. Junior guard Tyler Kolek also ranks second in the nation averaging 7.5 assists per game and has dished out 6.8 per contest in BIG EAST play.
After Tuesday’s contest, the Johnnies go on the road for two of the next three contests, beginning Saturday against Providence at Amica Mutual Pavilion. The contest will tip at 12 p.m. on FS1.
