Hofstra edges out UNC Greensboro 65-53

A balanced offensive attack and a strong defensive effort combined to give the Hofstra men’s basketball team a 65-53 victory over UNC Greensboro on Saturday afternoon at the Northern Classic at Place Bell in Laval, Quebec, Canada.

Sophomore Darlinstone Dubar led the way for the Pride with 17 points on 7-10 shooting from the field, while redshirt senior Tyler Thomas chipped in with 14 points.

Hofstra picked up its fifth win of the season and improved to 5-2 with the victory, while UNC Greensboro dropped to 3-3.

With the score tied at 12 early in the first half, Hofstra would score the game’s next 13 points to take a 25-12 lead with 10:39 left in the half following an old-fashioned three-point play from redshirt freshman Amar’e Marshall. Thomas was huge during the run as he scored eight points, including a pair of three-pointers.

After taking an eight-point lead into the break, Dubar extended the lead to 11 in the opening minute of the second stanza with a three-point play to make it 38-27 with 19:42 left in regulation.

The Spartans closed the gap to five, 45-40, with 11:50 on the clock before the Pride clamped down on defense and took control. Hofstra used a 13-2 run, and also held UNC Greensboro without a field goal for a 5:19 span to open up a 58-42 lead with 6:31 left. That would be plenty of breathing room for the Pride as they went on to capture the 12-point victory.

Marshall had another solid outing as he contributed 10 points in the win. Redshirt senior Aaron Estrada added seven points, a career-high tying 10 rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

Mikeal Brown-Jones led the Spartans with 11 points, while a trio of players had 10 points for UNCG.

Hofstra will conclude play at the Northern Classic on Sunday when it faces Quinnipiac at 4 p.m. Links to watch, listen, and follow the live statistics can be found on the men’s basketball schedule page at GoHofstra.com.
