There will be 36 Open Division teams in action when the Third Qualifying Round for the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup gets underway this weekend (November 19-20). The 18 winners will square off next month to determine the nine qualifiers who will join U.S. Adult Soccer Association (USASA) National Amateur Cup champions Bavarian United of Wisconsin as Open Division representatives at the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Proper, which kicks off in March.
The action is bound to be tense in the Third Qualifying Round with places in the final Fourth Round (December 17-18) on the line. The 2021 National Amateur Cup-champion Lansdowne Yonkers – who’ve yet to concede through two rounds of play – welcome UPSL’s Oyster Bay United, while an all-Massachusetts affair sees 2022 Open Cup Proper qualifiers Brockton United take on Unations FC of Worcester.
In Pennsylvania, Vereinigung Erzgebirge, who’ve only conceded once in Qualifying so far, play a third game in a row at their long-time homebase in Warminster against 2018 National Amateur Cup runners-up West Chester United SC.
NoVa FC are charging hard to make back-to-back appearances in the Open Cup Proper. They’ll face off with a DCFC side who knocked out 2017 Open Cup heroes Christos FC on the last matchday. Chicago House AC, the latest club founded by Open Cup-winning executive Peter Wilt, will take on Metro Louisville in Indiana.
There are also three Third Qualifying Round games in the state of Florida, venue of the recently concluded 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final which saw local MLS side Orlando City defeat USL Championship contenders Sacramento Republic. Open Cup regulars Miami United FC and Club de Lyon will meet – with both coming off strong showings in the previous round.
On the Western side of the schedule, debutants Athletic Club of Sloan’s Lake take on regulars Azteca FC in Colorado, while California hosts a pair of potential Qualifying classics.
Orange County FC – reigning UPSL national champions and 2019 Open Cup underdog heroes – are up against 2022 Open Cup participants Escondido FC. Inter San Francisco, out of the city’s historic SFSFL, are yet to concede a goal in two Qualifying games and will be keen to keep up the momentum at home against Davis Legacy FC.
Elsewhere, down in the Open Division hotbed of Texas, 2022 Open Cup participants D’Feeters Kicks SC of Dallas meet Houston’s D10 Lions.
