NYCFC Moves On With 3-0 Win In First Round of Playoffs

In front of a rain covered crowd of 18,066 the New York City Football Club advanced to the next round of the MLS playoffs with a 3-0 win at Citi Field against Inter Miami. On a night that was largely controlled by the Gents in Blue, the club fired a barrage of 27 shots include 9 on target. The first half started saw 16 of those shots head Miami’s way including an absolute highlight reel stop of a Heber shot saw Defender Aimé Mabika kick the ball into his own crossbar followed immediately by Rightback Christopher McVey attempt to clear only to bounce clear off his own post.

As the rain came down heavier in the beginning of the second half the crowd’s energy seemed to have gone with it in an eerie 180. However the scoring finally opened at the 63rd minute with a line shot by Gabriel Pereria finding the left side of the net, followed just six minutes later with a second goal, this time by Maxi Moralez going bottom right instead. Per head coach Nick Cushing about Maxi, “He is a special player. I think he has evolved his role this season within the team because he’s playing a little bit deeper, because of the injuries we’ve had he’s started to play a little bit deeper. To me it was a masterclass because he was in the positions, he needed to be to give the team balance defensively but also at the same time he played like a real high-level number ten in creating and he scored a chance.”

1495 Sports is proud to bring the following Post Match Press Conference Video that features thoughts from Head Coach Cushing:

In the waning minutes of the match at 90′ Heber capped it with a right footed shot towards the center and giving the club a padded goal it likely didn’t need, but welcomed just the same.

Next up for the club is a trip north of the border and facing a much renewed CF Montreal club and it’s 2nd place finish in the East this season for a 1pm Sunday match. The winner moves onto the Eastern Conference Finals.

5 Notes:

1) Citi Field has been a great location for the Gents in Blue, having gone 3-0-2 this season. Initially this match was scheduled to be played at Red Bull Arena before being moved to Queens instead.

2) In a somewhat sad note, the match ended the long career of Gonzalo Higuaín. The popular Argentinian player retires at the age of 34 after spending his last three years of a long soccer career with Inter Miami; scoring 29 goals in 67 matches including a team high 16 this season.

3) CF Montreal experienced a turnaround this season. After placing no higher than 7th in the East every season since 2016 the club ended up in 2nd with 65 points, second only to the Philadelphia Union.

4) NYCFC was without Alfredo Morales, Talles Magno and Tayvon Gray due to injury. Their status against Montreal remains unknown at this time.

5) NYCFC has had success against Montreal in 16 matches, going 9-2-5, including 1-0-1 this season.
