New York City FC vs Philadelphia Union Preview

Showdown of the Streaks
New York City Football Club’s matchup against Philadelphia Union promises to be a significant match, and for many reasons: this will be the first time these two teams play each other at Subaru Park since last year’s Eastern Conference Final, NYCFC will be looking to take three points to stay in first place in the conference from a Union side that is also vying for the top spot and only a point off, and both NYCFC and the Philadelphia Union have aspirations of keeping their unbeaten runs in the league alive. The Philadelphia Union and NYCFC kicked off their streaks in the league after away losses in April to the same Eastern Conference opponent: Toronto FC. Since playing Toronto on April 16, the Union has gone eight games unbeaten, while NYCFC has gone nine since traveling to Canada on April 2. This will be the first time since 2011 that two teams on 8+ unbeaten streaks will face off, and only the sixth time in league history!

About Last Time
The memories attached to NYCFC’s last trip down to Subaru Park are certainly good ones: the stadium was the site of the 2021 MLS Cup Eastern Conference Final, where NYCFC edged out the home side 2-1 to be crowned conference champions and head to the MLS Cup Final. Fast forward to this season, and NYCFC is heading to Subaru Park in hopes of continuing their unbeaten streak in the league and keeping their spot at the top of the Eastern Conference. And NYCFC’s recent record at Subaru Park may be a boost: of their last five matches played when being hosted by Philadelphia across all competitions, NYCFC has won three of them, all by a two-goal margin.

Second Half History
One aspect of play that consistently shows up in matches where NYCFC and Philadelphia face off is second half goals. Stretching back to the team’s first meeting during NYCFC’s inaugural season, whenever goals are scored, they overwhelmingly come in the second half for both teams. Only three matches between these two saw goals scored solely in the first half: the first being Philadelphia’s most recent 2-0 victory this season over NYCFC on March 10, where Alejandro Bedoya and Dániel Gazdag scored in the 12th and 33rd minutes; and the second being a 3-1 win for NYCFC on October 28, 2018, where all four goals were scored prior to the first half ending; and the third coming in 2016, where the Union scored twice, with the latest goal in the 41st minute. Of 50 goals scored all-time between the two teams, 30 of them came in the second half with NYCFC scoring 17 while 13 were put in the back of the net by the Union. Comparing the history to the current season’s statistics, 24 of NYCFC’s total 43 goals across all competitions have come in the second half, while the number stands at 10 of 21 total for the Union.
