New York Liberty edge out Connecticut for First win of 2022 Season

The New York Liberty opened up the 2022 WNBA Season on with a close 81-79 victory over the Connecticut Sun at the Barclays Center on Saturday,

With the victory New York was able to snap a nine-game losing streak against Connecticut, as the last victory for the Liberty against the Sun was on July 11, 2018. The Liberty had themselves an impressive shooting performance at the Barclays Center going 47.5% (28-25) shooting from the field.

There were four players for New York Who finished with double figure scoring at Sabrina Ionescu, Natasha Howard, Sami Whitcomb and Jocelyn Willoughby all led the scoring.

For Ionesco, she was able to have 13 of her 25 points in the second period, that ties her highest single-quarter scoring total of 13 points, that happened against the Fever on May 14, 20221.

Whitcomb, who had herself a bit of a milestone as she was able to play in her 150th career game, was able to score 15 points on an 50% (4-of-8) shooting from the field. Sami also impressed on the glass tallying five rebounds, while also dishing out five assist and three steals.

Returning to the Liberty lineup after injury was Willoughby, who had 13 points and five rebounds. One of the most important moments for Jocelyn, were her two clutch rebounds with 24.4 seconds and 12.6 seconds remaining that helped the team secure the victory.

The Liberty will now go on the road to take on the Chicago Sky on Wednesday, with the tip scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
