Washington Spirit and Chicago Red Stars set to Clash for Championship

It all comes down to this it will be the Washington Spirit vs the Chicago Red Stars who are going to take the pitch for the NWSL Championship. These two will clash at 12:00 pm with the action airing on the CBS Network

For the Spirit they were able to advance to the Championship round with a 2-1 thriller over second-seeded OL Reign in the Semifinals. The OL Reign got on the board early, but the Spirit responded back with goals by Trinity Rodman and Ashley Sanchez.

It has been a while since the Spirit has been in the Championship as the last time the team had an opportunity to battle for the Championship was in 2016.

These two teams have meet three times during the season, as the Spirit have a 0-2-1 record against the Red Stars. Chicago has been able to outscore the Spirit 5-2 during the meetings with each other.

One of the players to watch for on the Spirit will be keeper Aubrey Bledsoe who is celebrating a birthday today. Bledsoe who was recognized as the NWSL’s Goalkeeper of the Year. Bledsoe has been able to tally eight clean sheets during the course of the NWSL season and allowed four goals in the last 10 matches.

Chicago, meanwhile, was able to shock the world by knocking off the top-seeded Portland Thorns with a 2-0 decision to get to the Championship round. The Red Stars have lost only twice since August 15 and have a ton of momentum going into the match today.

One of the biggest keys to the successful season that Chicago has had is the fact that they have been led on defense by Sarah Gorden. Meanwhile on offense, Mal Pugh has been one of the more crucial pieces to any attack that the team may have.

These two teams will be playing for the most prestigious prize in all of NWSL in the NWSL Championship and hope to bring that back to their cities who have supported their teams throughout the season
