St. John’s star Julian Champagnie Earns Weekly Honor Roll Spot

After pacing the Red Storm’s scoring efforts during a 2-0 start to the campaign, Julian Champagnie has been named to the first BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll of the season, it was announced on Monday afternoon by the conference office.

Champagnie, a unanimous Preseason First Team All-BIG EAST selection, averaged 21.0 points in just 24.0 minutes per game during the Red Storm’s wins against Mississippi Valley State and Saint Peter’s. He also posted 4.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals per contest.

On Tuesday against the Delta Devils, the Brooklyn native scored 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including a 2-for-5 effort from deep, as the Red Storm cruised to a 119-61 win, the program’s most lopsided margin of victory in 70 years.

Against Saint Peter’s on Saturday, Champagnie made five of his 10 tries from long range on his way to a 22-point performance and a 21-point win for the Johnnies.  The BIG EAST leader in both scoring average (19.8) and free throw percentage (88.7%) a season ago, Champagnie went 5-for-5 from the line against the Peacocks.

On the week, Champagnie shot 51.9 percent (14-of-27) from the floor and connected on seven of his 15 attempts from beyond the arc (46.7%).

A First Team All-BIG EAST selection this past spring, Champagnie came back to St. John’s after going through the NBA Pre-Draft process.  Since his return, he has earned spot on preseason watch lists for numerous national awards including The Naismith Trophy, The Wooden Award, The NABC Player of the Year Award and the Julius Erving Award.

Champagnie and the Red Storm will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Bloomington to take on Indiana in the Gavitt Tipoff Games.  The contest is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. on FS1.
