The No. 1/1 Connecticut Huskies defeated St. John’s, 77-41, in the quarterfinal round of the BIG EAST Tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena on Saturday afternoon.
BIG EAST Player and Freshman of the Year Paige Bueckers led the way for the Huskies in scoring, finishing with 17 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the floor. Two other players notched double figures for UConn, as Christyn Williams and Olivia Nelson-Ododa chipped in 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Leilani Correa and Unique Drake netted a team-high seven points each. Correa also grabbed a team-best eight rebounds on the afternoon for the Red Storm.
In the opening minutes of the first quarter, St. John’s defense held the Huskies, who lead the conference in scoring offense, to just two points. After struggling to generate much offense early, UConn unleashed a 11-2 run to pull ahead by nine, 13-9.
Camree Clegg checked in for the Red Storm at the three-minute mark and wasted no time, making a drive through traffic to cut into the Huskies’ lead, 13-6. Connecticut fired off five unanswered points to close out the first quarter with a double-digit lead, 18-6.
The Huskies continued to dominate over the second stanza, ballooning their advantage to 23, 38-15, at the intermission.
St. John’s put forth its highest scoring output over the final two periods, netting 13 points in both the third and fourth quarter before UConn locked in the victory.
