The St. John’s University Women’s Basketball team fell to a very tough No. 1/1 University of Connecticut, 77-32, on Wednesday evening at Carnesecca Arena.
UConn’s Christyn Williams finished with a game-high 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor. Paige Bueckers recorded 20 points, nine assists and four rebounds for the visiting team. Olivia Nelson-Ododa and Aaliyah Edwards rounded out the Huskies (17-1, 14-0 BIG EAST) to finish in double-figures with 17 and 10 points, respectively.
Raven Farley led the way for the Red Storm (6-12, 3-10 BIG EAST) with seven points and five rebounds. Unique Drake dished out a team-high four assists to go along with seven points. Kadaja Bailey also chipped in seven points for the Red Storm.
Neither team managed to generate much offense in the early going of the contest, as the Huskies led by five, 7-2, at the first media timeout. Coming out of the huddle, UConn used an 11-4 run to grow its lead to 12, 18-6, after 10 minutes of action.
Rayven Peeples finished at the rim for the Red Storm to open up the second quarter before UConn fired off seven unanswered points, expanding its advantage to 17, 25-8, with 7:27 remaining in the half.
The two teams traded blows over the next minute and a half before the visiting Huskies took off on a 16-2 offensive surge, ballooning their lead to 31, 46-15, at the intermission.
St. John’s put forth its highest scoring output in the third quarter, recording 14 points with five coming from Farley.
After struggling to find the bottom of the net through the first three minutes of the final frame, Sara Zabrecky finally broke through for St. John’s, converting on a jumper. UConn closed out the game on a 9-1 run.
The Red Storm will return to action on Sunday, when St. John’s welcomes Providence to Carnesecca Arena. The Johnnies and the Friars will tip off at 2 p.m. on BEDN.
